Proper tire inflation provides safe handling, shorter stopping distances, comfortable ride, proper tire wear and fuel economyr. The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is designed to alert a driver about a tire with low air presssure before it becomes a problem..
TPMS has been required by law since 2008. It is standard equippment in all cars and light trucks (under 10,000 pounds) sold in the US. It consist of sensors that monitor and report tire pressure data to an on-board computer. If the pressure in a tire drops below a specified level a warning light illumnates on the dashboard alerting the driver to a possible flat tire.
If your TPMS light is on stop and have your tire pressures checked and your tires inspected for possible leaks. A flashing TPMS light indicates a problem with the components that make up the TPMS and you should have it checked and repaired.
It is important to note that most TPMS sensors are part of the tire valve stem and they are battery operated. Like all battery operated things, batteries go dead. The batteries in the TPMS valve stem sensor will last about 5 to 6 years. Dead batteries in TPMS sensor require replacing the TPMS valve stem/sensor assembly. The batteries can not be replaced seperatley.
